Mengo Community

Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. -Matthew 25:40

The people of Mengo Hospital and Dr. Edith Namulema, the director of the HIV/AIDS clinic, are grateful for the generosity and participation of Christ Church.

The Feast of the Uganda Martyrs

Christ Church's Mengo Community hosted the Feast of the Uganda Martyrs. Attendees enjoyed authentic Ugandan food, dancing, and drumming while bidding for special items during a silent auction. Proceeds will go towards construction of a second floor for Mengo Hospital.

Mengo Hospital

mengo-trip-3-may-2010.jpg Christ Church’s relationship with Mengo Hospital was born out of prayer in 1982, when a group of parishioners, who had come together to pray for Africa, encountered Gwen Whitaker, a British missionary nurse who served at Mengo for 30 years. She suggested that the group pray for Mengo Hospital, which had just emerged from the chaos and violence of Idi Amin’s rule. Friends of Mengo U.S. grew out of that providential meeting.

Over the last 30 years, the committee has sent medicines, purchased a truck to transport food supplies, defrayed school fees to children of Mengo staff members and built a chapel as a gift for the 100th anniversary of the hospital. In 2005, Friends of Mengo U.S., along with Mengo committees in Canada and the U.K., completed a 10-year effort to build a modern and fully equipped dental clinic.

A recent focus is with the HIV/AIDS clinic, including providing support to the staff, who serve their patients with great care under trying circumstances, and the children’s program. Mengo’s children’s program serves more than 60 children, who typically were infected at birth.

Now Christ Church is currently funding a program that prevents the transmission of the deadly virus from pregnant women to their new born children. Work through Mengo Hospital’s HIV/AIDS clinic has been successful in reducing the number of babies that develop this terrible disease.

Since 1982,  many Christ Church parishioners have journeyed to Uganda and returned home spiritually enriched by new relationships at Mengo – in giving we receive. Clinic's director, Dr. Edith Namulema, her dedicated staff, and the patients they care for are truly grateful for the support from Christ Church and feel blessed by our commitment to them.
