What does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God? – Micah 6.8

As predicted, there are those for whom today is a great day because their candidate will now be president.  There are those for whom today is a very difficult day, as their candidate has lost.  As the last of the confetti falls and the last of the tears are dried, we have the opportunity-- right now!-- to build a better nation, a better society, a better Alexandria and indeed, a better Christ Church.  We will do this by being even more the people God created us to be: people that are kind and gentle in our words, bold and loving in our actions, reconciling and forgiving in our prayers.

Every time we baptize a child into our community, we all renew our baptismal vows.  We all repeat the baptismal covenant, a covenant we make with God and with one another.  The final promise in that covenant is this one:

Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being?

And our response, every time:

I will, with God’s help.

With God’s help, and with a strong community around us, we will fulfill our baptismal vows, we will build a better nation, we will make way for the kingdom of God.
