What Does the Lord Require of You...

What does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God? – Micah 6.8

Listening More Carefully

Posted by Jason, November 2, 2016

When I was in graduate school, one of my organ professors was part of a panel of judges adjudicating an organ competition. One player after the next would perform the same repertoire. With but a few exceptions, I thought all of the players sounded alike. In my lesson the following week, I made this comment to my professor. He smiled and said, “Yes, it could all sound alike.”

Notes from the Mountain – Dare to Enjoy Your Life!

Posted by Ann, October 20, 2016

I just got home  from a two-day clergy retreat up at Shrine Mont. The presenters this time were two brothers from SSJE. Christ Church has a long-standing relationship with the brothers from SSJE, but in case you don’t know what that stands for it is the Society of St. John the Evangelist. They are an Episcopal order of monks and they are the most loving, coolest people I know.

The Boy With the Pull-Along Wagon

Posted by Santiago, October 6, 2016

On Thursday mornings, Lazarus food pantry volunteers distribute love in the form of smiles, warm greetings, and food to our neighbors in need in the City of Alexandria. The Meade Room is transformed into a mart of kindness and comestibles. One by one, our neighbors are warmly greeted by a love-in-motion coordinator and assigned a beatitudes-hero to guide them through tables with non-perishables, meats, vegetables, bread, and an assortment of fresh items.

The Gospels: Fact and Mystery

Posted by Melanie, September 28, 2016

I did not go to church this past Sunday; I however did go to my prayer table, I lit some candles and pulled up the lectionary page on my phone. I opened my bible, I wanted to read and hear what you were reading and hearing.

A Back to School Blessing

Posted by Matthew, September 14, 2016

I’ve always loved this time of year. September heralds the arrival of Fall (hands down my favorite season) and it finally starts to become socially acceptable to talk about Halloween costumes again. Most importantly, as a life-long nerd and former teacher, the start of September will always bring up fond memories of back-to-school.

New Beginnings and the Pause

Posted by Heather, September 7, 2016

It is the first week of school for my family – both my daughters and my husband in his work as a professor. New adventures await and they are excited for those. But there is also caution and a bit of sarcasm from the girls. Hmm, perhaps we shouldn’t have watched Ferris Bueller’s Day Off  so close to the end of vacation… But one of the things that Matthew Broderick’s character says has some deep relevance to the life of faith:

Newport Revelations

Posted by Jason, August 31, 2016

In early August, I was fortunate once again to attend the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) training course in Newport, Rhode Island. Every summer these weeklong courses are held throughout the country. Each course has its own make up – some are for boys only, some for girls only, some are just for trebles, and some, like Newport, are for both trebles (boys and girls) and adults. I’ve attended this same course the past five years, and each year I return invigorated and optimistic for the future of church music.

A Little Something for the Soul

Posted by Melanie, August 17, 2016

Greetings Christ Church and all readers!  As I prepare to leave tomorrow to take my last child to college I am scrambling to get all that must be done – done. I was sent this prayer a few minutes ago. So please read this lovely prayer and watch this short video my husband made from our balcony in Buxton, North Carolina a few weeks ago. The prayer and the video fill my heart and soul, I hope they speak to you as well.
