  • An air conditioning system and a sprinkler system for fire protection installed

  • Shrine Mont camps established

  • President Lyndon Johnson and Mrs. Johnson attended service to honor George Washington’s Birthday

  • First woman, Marguerite Lamond, elected to Christ Church Vestry

1973

  • Christ Church celebrates its own bicentennial
  • Began first consistent use of processional cross at Christ Church

1975

  • Present Organ installed by Austin Organ Co. of Hartford, CT

1976

  • Christ Church celebrates national bicentennial

1977–1992

  • The Rev. Dr. Mark Semmes Anschutz, Rector – period of great growth in size of  congregation, Modern restoration of Christ Church, Chernobyl, Our Little Roses, Christ Child Project ministries begun

1979

  • Christ Church Foundation established

1980

  • First female seminarian began serving at Christ Church

1981

  • President Jimmy Carter attends service
  • Vice President (and Future President) George H. W. Bush and Mrs. Bush attend service to honor George Washington’s Birthday

  • Mengo Hospital Ministry commenced
  • President and Mrs. Ronald Reagan attend service

October 19, 1986

  • Marshall Lloyd Bush, nephew of President George Bush, baptized

1986–1987

  • Parish Halls remodeled and connected

1987

  • Reorganized and expanded Christ Church Gift Shop opens

1990

  • Virginia Diocesan Episcopal Church Women celebrates 100th anniversary of founding at Christ Church

1991

  • The Rev. Dr. Mark Anschutz hired Eve Montavon as the first Director of Outreach and Mission and the Lazarus Ministry was launched as a small ministry to help those in the city who struggled

1992

  • Mary Dixon Hutcheson was hired to assist with our growing outreach and mission needs
