Mission
Christ
Church works closely with the Episcopal
Diocese of Louisiana (EDOLA) to support those affected by hurricanes
Katrina and Rita.
We:
· Provide volunteers
to help clean out and rebuild houses.
· Contribute
financial aid.
· Donate needed
supplies.
EDOLA’s house gutting and rebuilding work focuses on the poor, the
elderly, and the fragile.
Hundreds of houses have been
gutted in the greater
New Orleans
area since August 2005.
The Diocese has now started the
rebuilding phase, where volunteers hang drywall, paint, install
insulation, and undertake basic landscaping.
No
special expertise is required to be on a house rebuilding team, but
volunteers must be at least 16 years of age.
The teams are led by trained EDOLA
staffers who teach volunteers how to undertake the work.
The team leaders also ensure that
appropriate safety precautions are followed and that adequate water,
food, and rest breaks are undertaken.
Non-physically
strenuous opportunities also exist for volunteers who wish to feed the
hungry, dispense medical care, help residents obtain relief funds, and
support EDOLA’s mobile units that provide food and other needed supplies
for the many who are still struggling.
Evenings are
left open for volunteers to enjoy the uniquely American
New Orleans
culture.
Katrina and Rita struck two years ago, but great needs persist.
Christ
Church is committed to providing continuing
opportunities for those who wish to support these relief efforts.
