Foundations for Spiritual Leadership

Overview & Mission
The transition from the
academic environment of seminary to the experiential nature of parish
ministry is an intense time for vocational formation.
In
the early years of ministry, personal, theoretical, and theological
dynamics come together to shape the individual’s priestly identity. The
Foundations for Spiritual Leadership Clergy Residency Program at Christ
Church supports and challenges new clergy in this time of formation.
The mission of the program is to enable new clergy to develop holy habits
and healthy leadership practices that will serve as the foundation for their
years of service in parish ministry.

Program Structure
Throughout
the two-year program, residents enter into a core curriculum for vocational
development including clergy and lay mentoring, group discernment, cohort
projects, retreats, preaching review, and weekly seminars.
Residents also participate in ministry area rotations including worship,
mission and outreach, stewardship, pastoral care, faith formation,
congregational leadership, and parish administration.
During the second year, residents are asked to choose an area of focus for
extended learning and personal development.

Resources
Christ Church, Alexandria offers the resources for a challenging residency
experience. It is an historic church with a vibrant congregation. Many
members reside in the area and work in the nation’s capital. As a teaching
congregation, parishioners are resources for leadership development.
The residency program
is made possible by a Lilly Endowment grant from the Transition Into
Ministry Program.
The TiM’s
program offers residents extended opportunities to gather with ecumenical
peers for seminars, small groups, and formative workshops. See
http://transitionintoministry.org/
for more
information.
The program offers a
full-time salary and benefits according to the clergy compensation
guidelines for the Diocese of Virginia.
Other program
resources include The Diocese of Virginia with its Fresh Start program and
clergy retreats and the
Washington
DC
metro area, a short ride away by public transportation or car.
